Stansted Airport information

London Stansted Airport, currently Britain's fourth busiest airport, first opened its doors to commercial passengers in 1986. Situated in Essex, it is less than a mile from the Hertfordshire border and approx. 30 miles northeast of Central London, but is easily reached by car as it is just off the M11.

There are three passenger satellites in which the departure gates are situated; one is connected to the main terminal by an air-bridge and the other two by the Stansted Airport Transit System people mover.

The airport is currently owned and operated by the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) who bought it in 2013 from the BAA. With more scheduled European destinations than any other UK airport, it is popular with both the budget and charter airlines with Easyjet and Ryanair flying from Stansted as well as other well-known airlines such as Thomson Airways and Thomas Cook.

How to Get to Stansted Airport

To get to Stansted Airport by car, leave the M11 at junction 8 if you are southbound or junction 8a if you are northbound, then just follow the signs for Stansted airport.

Car Parking Options at Stansted Airport

There are options both on and off the airport, some in walking distance and for maximum convenience the Meet and Greet services.

On-Airport Parking at Stansted Airport

Within the perimeter of Stansted airport and run by the airport. There are several car parks, from the Long Stay car park to Stansted Jetparks car park. These car parks are self-park which means you can keep your car keys. You may still need to take a transfer bus, but some will be in walking distance.

Long Stay Parking at Stansted Airport

The Long Stay car park has an approx. 10 minute transfer time, Mid Stay car park approx. 8 minutes and the furthest car park, Jetparks car park at approx. 15 minutes transfer time.

Short Stay Parking at Stansted Airport

For those in a hurry, the Short Stay car park is very convenient with a short 2 minute walk into the terminal.

Off-Airport Parking near Stansted Airport

Usually the best value, as it is a little further away you will need to get the free transfer bus into the airport. You will usually need to leave your car keys at this type of car park.

Two of the popular car parks are Maple Manor Park and Ride and I Love Park and Ride, both of which are located just 3-5 minutes transfer time from the terminal and have the Park Mark Award for safer parking.

Meet and Greet at Stansted Airport

You will be met right by Stansted's terminal building so no transfers will be necessary, your car will then be taken to a secured compound before it is bought back on your return. This is often especially useful for families, those with mobility difficulties and those with bulky luggage for example, skiers, snowboarders and golfers etc.

Maple Manor Meet and Greet and I Love Meet and Greet both offer this service, which can also be very useful for those with mobility difficulties, families and travellers with large items of luggage e.g. skiers, snowboarders and golfers etc.

Hotels with parking at Stansted Airport

There are a few hotels close to Stansted Airport and If you can book a hotel and parking package it will save you money on booking these two items separately

The Stansted Radisson SAS Hotel, with a choice of restaurants and leisure facilities, is right next door to the terminal and has an undercover walkway between the hotel and terminal building.

Also, there is the nearby Stansted DeSalis Hotel, a short bus transfer away.

Stansted Airport Departure Lounge

Here you will find all the usual airport facilities, including cafes and restaurants including James Martin Kitchen, Costa and Giraffe, bars including Wetherspoons.

Enjoy a little retail therapy wish a range of shops including World duty free shopping and brands such as East, Fatface, Lacoste, Ted Baker, BOSS and many others.

Other services to be found are a bureau de change, cash dispensers, toilets, baby changing rooms, amusements and a chapel.

You can also access the Stansted Airport wi-fi which is available all over the terminal and free of charge for the first 60 minutes. All you will need to do is register your device by completing a few simple details.

Stansted Airport Lounge

The Escape Lounge has a complimentary bar stocked with an assortment of alcoholic drinks such as wines, beer and spirits, alongside tea, coffee, soft drinks and fresh fruit juices.
